Forest for the Trees

I was raised on the water
so I thought I knew the sea
I was praised by my father
I thought he knew everything
———————-
but I was wrong more than I was right
I gave less than I should to get this high
———————-
I sat on a hilltop
as a motherless child sang to me
I was surrounded by forest
that I couldn’t see for the trees
———————-
I came back to the water
and she remembered my name
She looked so unfamiliar
I’d been blind to her pain
———————-
cause I’ve been wrong more than I’ve been right
I gave less than I could to get this high
———————-
I sat on a hilltop
as a motherless child sang to me
I was surrounded by forest
that I couldn’t see for the trees
———————-
She’s been crying out
I sang along
She’s been dying now
I knew not her song
———————-
I sat on a hilltop
as a motherless child sang to me
I was surrounded by forest
that I couldn’t see for the trees
Somewhere in the distance
My brothers-in-arms called to me
Some folks fight for the war
while others just fight for the peace
